Iwata addressed region locking earlier today in reaction to a petition to remove region-locking from future Nintendo products. Here is what he said:
“From some people’s perspective, it might seem like a kind of restriction. However, we hope people can appreciate the fact that we’re selling our products worldwide. There are many different regions around the world, and each region has its own cultural acceptance and legal restrictions, as well as different age ratings. There are always things that we’re required to do in each different region, which may go counter to the idea that players around the world want the freedom to play whatever they want. I hope that game fans can understand that the industry isn’t doing this solely out of business ego. There are some reasons behind it.”
Here is what I think. I actually signed the petition. After Iwata said this, I wish I never had, lemme tell you why. Australia is a great example, they banned Saints Row 4. Let’s say it was exclusive to the Wii U and the system was region free, people would order the game on Amazon or else where, and Nintendo would have a legal issue on their hands. Australia is very strict in it’s video game policy. It would hurt Nintendo if they got a bad rep with Australia, they may even ban the console. The only way to comply with different laws in different countries.
